Chronic Fatigue/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is a debilitating condition that affects up to 1 in every 250 people in the UK. It involves a complex range of symptoms including fatigue, malaise, headache, sleep disturbance, muscle and joint pain and cognitive difficulties.
Somerset Chronic Fatigue/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Service offers treatment, advice, education and support for people diagnosed with CFS/ME and their carers.
The Service is provided by a small multi-disciplinary team based in Wells using treatments approved by the NICE guidance for the management of CFS/ME. The Service offers assessment and treatment based on the strategies of activity management which include pacing, setting baselines and relaxation.
Following assessment we offer up to 4 individual appointments with a practitioner held in Wells or a group programme of 6 sessions which are held in a number of venues across the county including Bridgwater, Taunton and Yeovil. Telephone appointments and e-mail contact are also available. A number of additional sessions covering particular topics such as memory and concentration, are also provided and a conference is held each year.
The Service is open to adults aged 18 and over and a transition clinic is available for young adults currently treated by the Paediatric Service and needing to transfer to the Adult Service. Referrals are made by a general practitioner (GP) and once accepted by our specialist doctor, appointments are usually offered within 10 weeks. The Service operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays each week.
