Dietetics

What is a dietitian?

Dietitians are trained in all aspects of nutrition and health.  Dietitians are registered with the Health Professionals Council, which means that they have to work within codes of practice including confidentiality.

Who can get an appointment with the dietitian?

Your GP, practice nurse or other healthcare professional may refer you to the community dietitian who can offer dietary advice for conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, coeliac disease, obesity etc.  You may be asked to make an appointment at reception or an appointment letter may be sent by the practice.  Your appointment will be at your GP surgery.

Please find a fact sheet, "Your appointment with the community dietitian" with patient information.

What to expect when you attend a dietetic appointment

  • Your first appointment will last half an hour.
  • The dietitian will discuss your completed food diary with you.
  • You may be asked about your weight, specific symptoms or blood tests.
  • You will usually be given written information and specific dietary aims.
  • Feel free to ask any questions
