Prison services

Somerset Community Health provides all primary care services for the 185 life sentenced prisoners at HMP Shepton Mallet.  It is a Nurse led service helping to improve the quality of care provided for this group of clients.  We are a very pro-active team, with new facilities.

Provision of Service

Prison healthcare comes under the remit of Adult Specialist Services in Somerset Community Health.  The service is commissioned by Dorset Primary Care Trust, so we have strong links with Dorset around networking and sharing good practice.

User Involvement

Quarterly healthcare meetings are held with service users and the prison team.  We also have focus groups and annual questionnaires so that prisoners can feedback their views of our services.

We aim to provide an equivocal service out in the community, so all NHS targets apply.  These are monitored through

  • Quality Outcome Framework assessment - similar to the framework used in GP practices

  • Prison Health Performance Quality Indicators.  There is an annual assessment for all prisons

  • Her Majesty's Inspectorate for prisons

  • Standards for Better Health

  • a monthly activity report

  • Complaints are investigated and shared by both the prison and Somerset Community  Health and then reported and acted upon accordingly

  • Adverse incidents are again reported to both the prison and Somerset Community Health, so lessons can be learnt
