Non Executive Director Profiles

Jane Barrie
Jane Barrie

Mrs Jane Barrie OBE DL - Chairman

Jane Barrie OBE DL is Chairman of NHS Somerset and formerly Chairman of Dorset and Somerset Strategic Health Authority. She is also a member of the NHS Confederation Primary Care Trust Network Board and a member of the Appointments Commission National Training Group.

She is a stockbroker by profession and formerly Regional Director of NatWest Stockbrokers.  With a keen interest in education, she is Chairman of Governors of Taunton School, the former Chairman of the Learning and Skills Council for Somerset and formerly a Board member of Connexions Somerset.  She is a past President of Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland, the organisation for women in management and the professions, working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women.  Also she is a Patron of St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice and President of Care Focus, Somerset.

She was awarded the OBE for services to the NHS in the 2004 New Year’s Honours List and recently has been commissioned a Deputy Lieutenant for Somerset.

Lou Evans
Lou Evans

Mr Lou Evans - Non Executive Director

Lou Evans has a long and distinguished career within the senior management for a number of Blue Chip companies.

In the late 1970s he was Commercial Director of Grand Metropolitan PLC supporting the company’s commercial operations across the whole of the North of England.

In the 1980s he was a Managing Director with Brent Walker PLC’s leisure Division and Director of Operations for Sega Group-Europe.

In the 90s he turned London Wasps rugby club professional. More recently he has been a Senior Project Manager working with six Somerset Authorities to develop integrated plans for waste collection and disposal.

Since October 2005, Mr Evans has been a Company Director with MBA Associates, a London based property company involved in developments within the housing and commercial sector. He was also recently appointed Non Executive Chairman of Arc Developments, a commercial subsidiary of Arcadia Housing group of which he is a main board member. Mr Evans lives in Wellington.

Andrew Govier
Andrew Govier

Mr Andrew Govier - Non Executive Director

Andrew Govier is a well known public figure in Taunton and Somerset. He is a town, district and Somerset County Councillor and former Mayor of Taunton Deane.

Most recently he has been Non Executive Director of Taunton Deane Primary Care Trust and is currently a member of the South West Councils.

Andrew participates in a wide range of local health and welfare charities, including ‘Supporting Parents and Children through Education (SPACE)’ and WHERE, a charity working with vulnerable groups.

In his early career, he worked as a computer programmer for the Ministry of Defence and later for the Charity Commission in Taunton. Mr Govier lives in Wellington.

Paul Jackson
Paul Jackson

Mr Paul Jackson - Non Executive Director

Paul Jackson has worked for many years in the field of Environmental Health and was the Chief Environmental Health Officer for Taunton from 1989-1994.

He subsequently became Regional Director (South and West of England) for the Meat Hygiene Service and was responsible for ensuring controls were in place to protect consumers from the risk of BSE/vCJD. A distinguished consultant, researcher, lecturer and assessor, he has acted as an advisor to a number of national and international professional institutes monitoring food safety.

Since 2003 he has developed training packages for and carried out research with State Veterinary Services in Eastern Europe, Holland and Denmark. He lives in Bishops Lydeard, near Taunton.

John Bloomfield
John Bloomfield

Mr John Bloomfield - Non Executive Director

John Bloomfield is a Director and Works Manager of Innovia Films Ltd, Bridgwater.  Previously he was manufacturing Director of Pakcel Ltd, St Helens, Lancashire.

Mr Bloomfield is a magistrate on the Sedgemoor Bench and Non Executive Director of Somerset Connexions.

He is a chartered chemist and Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
