Freedom of Information

As part of the changes to the NHS brought about by the Health and Social Care Act 2012, Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) and Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) ceased to exist on 31 March 2013.  Their responsibilities were taken over by a range of new organisations, some of which are detailed below:

Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)

The Somerset CCG is responsible for commissioning health services for the people of Somerset, including (but not limited to):

  • community health services
  • maternity services
  • hospital care
  • urgent and emergency care including A&E, ambulance and out-of-hours services
  • healthcare services for people with mental health conditions
  • healthcare services for people with learning disabilities
  • continuing healthcare
  • abortion services
  • Independent Funding Review Panel 
  • wheelchair services
  • home oxygen services
  • treatment of infectious diseases

NHS England 

NHS England will have 27 local area teams but will be one single organisation operating to a common model with one Board.  NHS England commissions:

  • specialised services
  • primary care services (such as GP, dental and pharmaceutical services)
  • offender healthcare
  • some services for members of the armed forces

Somerset County Council

The Local Authority in Somerset is now responsible for public health and health improvement services, including:

  • the Healthy Child Programme for school-age children (including school nurses)
  • sexual health services (excluding contraceptive services provided under the GP contract and HIV treatment - see NHS England)
  • public mental health services
  • local programmes to promote physical activity, improve diet/nutrition and prevent/address obesity
  • drug misuse and alcohol misuse services
  • tobacco control, including stop smoking services and prevention activity
  • NHS health checks
  • local initiatives to prevent accidental injury, including falls prevention
  • local initiatives to reduce seasonal mortality
