World Class Commissioning

The World Class Commissioning programme aims to develop Primary Care Trusts' commissioning competencies and describes a vision where commissioning is focused on 'Adding life to years and years to life' through:

  • better health and wellbeing for all

  • better care for all

  • better value for all

The World Class Commissioning programme is supporting NHS Somerset to deliver improved outcomes, and a proactive, rather than reactive health service, ensuring that the Primary Care Trust is developing its knowledge and skills in line with a set of core commissioning competencies.  In 2008/09 NHS Somerset was considered one of the highest performing Primary Care Trusts in the country in relation to these competencies.  NHS Somerset continued to work hard over the following year and achieved even better results in 2009/10.  The two reports are available by clicking the links below.

As part of the World Class Commissioning programme, NHS Somerset is taking forward challenging improvement plans for 10 specific Health Outcomes, listed below.  A poster has been developed for each Health Outcome, decribing:

  • why the outcome was chosen

  • the planned improvement in the delivery of the outcome

  • how this plan will be achieved

  • how we compare with others both nationally and internationally

To view the posters please click on the Health Outcomes listed below.

NHS Somerset has demonstrated consistent progress in its commissioning of services to improve the health of the local people of Somerset and will continue to work hard to achieve the recommendations made the World Class Commissioning panel.

Diabetes

In 2010 the World Class Commissioning panel recognised that the PCT has "made absolute progress over the last year, which should be recognised in the context of the wider and more challenging assessment criteria"

Staff Workshops

The panel suggested NHS Somerset "continue their focus on delivering health gains and reductions in health inequalities, building on their initial successes in lung cancer and teenage pregnancies"

Heart Failure

The panel congratulated NHS Somerset "on the steps taken and are taking including wider clinical involvement and the increasing evidence of clinical leadership
