Introduction
NHS Somerset was one of eleven pilot sites in the country selected by the Department of Health to take part in a two year project with the National Association of Patient Participation (NAPP). The aim of the project was to further develop Patient Participation Groups (PPG) across Somerset so that GP practices have a better understanding of how patients can contribute to:
-
commissioning services for that practice area
-
looking at self care
-
tackling health inequalities
-
health promotion activities
Background
In December 2007 twelve GP Practices in Somerset had Patient Participation Groups and 25 Practices expressed an interest in setting one up. During 2008 four workshops were held across Somerset, these workshops were aimed at Practices interested in setting up a PPG or in the process of setting one up. A county wide conference was held at Lyngford House in Taunton aimed at GP Practices who had established PPGs.
Current Position
In September 2011 there are 47 GP practices with Patient Participation Groups. News, advice and guidance is shared through a PPG newsletter that is produced by the Patient Experience Team and circulated to GP Practices and PPG chairs.
